A small blog chronicling the thoughts of a chap getting into anime.
The basic motivation for starting up was outlined in the first ever post. By and large it isn’t so much about being a relative newcomer to anime as it is just a general anime blog which happens to be by a guy who’s seen not so many series.
Further musings might be found on a fortnightly basis at the legendary teamblog Oi! Hayaku. The author might also be spotted sneaking around this MyAnimeList place.
Posts are not categorised, schedules are rough at best, promises will not be made. Hope you enjoy it.
Nice housekeeping (the new theme is refreshing), and I like the Asuka banner.

This particular moment in Neon Genesis Evangelion is ineffably important, to me at least. That battle fulfilled a need of mine for Asuka to be awesome. I was behind her the whole time, and even in her defeat here, she gave me what I was thirsting for.

Being firmly in the school which sees End of E as near-godhood I can only agree. I’m an Asuka partisan anyway and could only glory in a scene which offered validation without in any way compromising her charismatic insanity.
I guess without really knowing it I wanted her to get a definite moment in the sun, but I don’t think I’d have accepted victory.

Asuka in End of E is epic. Coburn, you say you wouldn’t have accepted victory. That reminds me of the Japanese Romantic School in the 1930s, for whom the most beautiful thing in the world was a heroic, totally annihilating defeat. I too symphatize.

As far as the romanticism of defeat goes, I agree that it’s powerful. It adds a lot to this scene.
But I originally meant more that victory would be so out of keeping with Evangelion’s style and message. Letting a nut like Asuka win out with a big mecha fight in the end would be almost as bad as deteriorating into the school-comedy genre satirised at the end of the series. I think that in the world of Eva ‘bad’ victories are the only victories possible.
